In what police are describing as a planned and targeted home invasion, a British businessman was brutally beaten with hammers and forced to transfer his life savings in cryptocurrency while intruders threatened to kill his unborn child. The shocking incident, which took place in the Smith’s Wood area of Solihull, West Midlands, highlights a dangerous new frontier in cyber-enabled physical crime—known in the security industry as a "wrench attack."

The Ordeal: 45 Minutes of Terror
The victim, an amateur investor named "James" (a pseudonym used to protect the family's identity), had built enough wealth from digital currency trading to quit his traditional job in 2023. However, his success turned into a nightmare when three masked men ambushed him and his heavily pregnant wife as they opened their front door around 5:20 PM on a Saturday evening.
Over the course of a 45-minute ordeal, the gang subjected the couple to horrific violence. James attempted to fight back but was swiftly struck across the face, head, and ribs with hammers, leaving him unresponsive on the floor. Simultaneously, another attacker pinned his wife—who was seven months pregnant—to the sofa, placing a pillow over her face.

While the ground-level thugs held the couple captive, it quickly became apparent that they lacked the technical knowledge to navigate James’s financial applications on their own. Instead, the entire robbery was micro-managed by a fourth individual supervising remotely via a live video call.

The Aftermath and Legal Hunt
Miraculously, despite the extreme emotional stress and trauma of the assault, the couple’s baby survived the event and was later born healthy at full term. However, the financial devastation is complete; James has lost his entire savings and is currently looking to re-enter a traditional workplace.
West Midlands Police are actively investigating the targeted assault using home security footage. The independent charity Crimestoppers has stepped in to assist the hunt, offering a £10,000 reward for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest and conviction.
Investigators believe the attackers are in their late teens or early 20s. One of the primary physical suspects is described as a Black male featuring a distinct small diagonal scar beneath his left eyebrow. Authorities are also seeking information regarding the driver of the getaway vehicle, who waited outside the home without a face covering.

Because blockchain transactions are irreversible once completed, traditional banks cannot freeze or recall the funds once a victim is forced to hit "send" under duress. Similar high-profile home invasions and kidnapping plots targeting crypto investors have recently spiked across the UK, France, and the United States.
James hopes that sharing their terrifying story will serve as a stark warning to others within the digital currency space. "They threatened my wife and my baby," he stated. "People need to understand these risks are real."
