Nobody really thinks about the receipt when an ATM gives them the amount of money.
People only start asking for it when something is missing.
I kept thinking about receipts when I was reading about @OpenGradient .
OpenGradient is usually described as an AI system for storing models running tasks and checking if they were done correctly.
It feels like giving AI its receipt.
Not because people enjoy paying for proof. Most people just want answers fast.
I thought that when AI does a task it also checks if it was done correctly at the time.
The answer shows up the proof shows up. Everything matches.
It seems simple.
The more I thought about it the more I questioned that idea.
Maybe the task happens first. Then the verification catches up later.
Markets want things fast.
Being first often matters more than being certain.
I wonder what
applications are depending on while the proof is still being generated.
Orders might already be placed positions might be. Collateral might be moving.
The verification might be a little, behind just milliseconds or maybe longer if lots of people are using it.
Most of the time maybe nobody cares about the delay.
I think what I don't understand is what happens to mistakes during that time.
Do users, protocols, liquidity providers or node operators get affected?
I'm not sure.
Generating proof is still a computation task and computation can't be done fast.
If more people want to use AI than can be verified then the verification process might start to feel normal.
Markets often learn what they can ignore based on incentives.
I wonder if people only start caring about verification when something goes wrong.
I used to think the important question was whether the proof existed.
Lately I'm not so sure that's the question.
Maybe the timing of the verification matters more than I thought.
