Reports say over $6 billion was stolen from Binance, and a few security firms are already pointing at North Korea.
TRM Labs says it’s highly confident a Lazarus-linked group called TraderTraitor was behind it. Chainalysis thinks the same, mainly because the attack looks connected to an earlier hack. ZachXBT also said it’s likely Lazarus.
Binance says the attack started with the laptop of one of its DevOps engineers, which was compromised. So it doesn’t look like a flaw in the exchange’s code. Someone got into a single device.
Not everyone is sure it’s North Korea, though. One person familiar with these investigations pointed out that Lazarus normally moves and sells stolen funds a lot faster than these attackers did. Similar methods aren’t proof, so the picture could still change.
On the recovery side, the Chainalysis CEO said partners have frozen around $3 billion so far. That’s coming from one source, so I’d treat it as reported for now.
If you hold funds on any exchange, it’s a good time to check your security settings. Turn on 2FA with an authenticator app, set an anti-phishing code, and use a withdrawal whitelist. Also watch out for emails or messages offering “compensation” or “recovery” after this, since scammers usually jump on news like this.
What do you think, does this change how much you keep on exchanges?
