RSI Explained: A Momentum Indicator, Not a Buy or Sell Button
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is one of the most widely used momentum indicators in technical analysis.
But there is one important thing beginners should understand:
RSI is not a buy or sell button.
RSI typically moves between 0 and 100 and is commonly used to understand the strength and momentum behind recent price movement.
đ Above 70
Often described as an âoverboughtâ area. But overbought does not automatically mean price must fall.
đ Below 30
Often described as an âoversoldâ area. But oversold does not automatically mean price must rise.
đ Divergence
When price and RSI move differently, it can provide additional context about momentum.
đ Momentum
RSI can help traders and learners observe whether momentum is strengthening or weakening.
The key lesson:
RSI provides context. It does not provide certainty.
Instead of asking, âIs RSI above 70, so should I sell?â try asking:
âWhat is RSI telling me about momentum, and does the broader market structure support that interpretation?â
That shiftâfrom using an indicator as a signal to using it as one piece of informationâis an important step in learning technical analysis.
