BITCOIN FACES $6.4B OPTIONS EXPIRY: WHAT REALLY MATTERS?
Around 81,700 Bitcoin options, representing approximately $6.44 billion in estimated notional value, are scheduled to expire on Deribit on August 28 at 08:00 UTC, according to reported exchange data.
🔍 UNDERSTAND THE NUMBER
$6.4B is notional exposure—not $6.4B of Bitcoin automatically being sold. Deribit’s inverse options settle based on their intrinsic value at expiry, rather than exchanging the full underlying amount.
📍 WHY $75K AND $80K MATTER
Reported positioning highlighted these two call-option strikes. As expiry approaches, market makers may adjust their hedges, potentially keeping price near certain strikes or amplifying moves through them. Neither level is guaranteed support or resistance.
⚠️ A LARGE EXPIRY DOESN’T DETERMINE DIRECTION
The headline alone cannot tell us whether Bitcoin will rally, decline or remain relatively stable.
💡 My take: The most useful signal will be whether price moves persist after settlement. I’m watching spot demand and follow-through as expiry-related positioning adjusts.
Will Bitcoin find clearer direction after the contracts settle? 👇
