MSCI is consulting on proposed changes to the eligibility of non-operating companies for its Global Investable Market Indexes (GIMI). A simulation using May 2026 data shows that Strategy (MSTR), Yellow Cake and Metaplanet would be removed under the proposed methodology, while ETH treasury company SharpLink and others would be placed on a watchlist. The proposed screen uses metrics including operating asset intensity, operating expenses, operating cash flow, non-operating fair value changes and financing cash flow to identify companies primarily reliant on capital raising to accumulate investment assets. The proposal has not yet been finalized. The consultation closes on September 30, with results expected by October 16 and potential implementation as part of the November 2026 Index Review.
