Solana Co-Founder Says Industry Is Not Ready for Alpenglow Upgrade
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko said the industry is not ready for the chain’s next major upgrade, Alpenglow. According to Odaily, Anza engineers have already migrated Solana’s developer network to the Alpenglow consensus protocol, which is designed to change how blocks are processed and reduce transaction finality from about 12.8 seconds to 100 to 150 milliseconds.

Circle and Tether Freeze Hacker Wallet After Bitget's $352 Million Heist
Circle and Tether have frozen stablecoins in a wallet linked to Thursday's $351.6 million Bitget hack, though the amount is a small fraction of the total, according to CoinDesk. On-chain data shows Circle blacklisted the address — labeled "Bitget Exploiter 8" on Etherscan — at 05:00 UTC Friday. The wallet holds about 170.47 ETH, 218,023 USDT and 99,990 USDC, and blockchain security firm MistTrack said Tether has since banned it too. That leaves roughly $318,000 in stablecoins stuck, while MistTrack's tracker shows other exploiter addresses still holding more than 63,000 ETH, which no issuer can freeze.

Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said attackers compromised a backend system in the exchange's wallet infrastructure, spoofed transaction data and triggered its authorization process to move funds out, ruling out a private-key compromise. She said Bitget's user protection fund, which holds over $464 million, covers the loss. Circle's quick action contrasts with its response to April's $285 million Drift hack, when the attacker moved about $232 million in USDC from Solana to Ethereum using Circle's own cross-chain transfer protocol; critics including ZachXBT said Circle could have acted faster to blacklist wallets and freeze funds, and Circle said it freezes assets when legally required.

Trump Discloses New Strategy Stock Purchases in July Filing
U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest ethics disclosure, OGE Form 278-T, shows that accounts under his name bought shares of Strategy Inc. on July 24 and July 27 in two separate transactions. According to ChainCatcher, the purchases were reported in ranges of $1,001 to $15,000 and $50,001 to $100,000.

The filing said the buys came when Strategy was near a 2026 low, and the stock has risen about 83% since July 24. The White House said the holdings are managed by a third-party institution on a discretionary basis, and Trump does not take part in trading decisions. The disclosure lists the positions under his status as a beneficiary.

The report also said Trump’s accounts have previously bought and sold Strategy shares multiple times. In June, the accounts sold positions totaling $16,002 to $65,000, and the two new buy orders were added in the July reporting window.

Bitcoin News | PlanB Says the Bear Market Is Over With $89,000 Next, But the Level He Cites Is Disputed
Analyst PlanB has declared the Bitcoin bear market over, saying the token has reclaimed the 50-week moving average at approximately $79,000 with the 100-week average around $89,000 as the next target. He pointed to Bitcoin's August close of $78,571 alongside improving indicators: the proportion of supply in profit rising from 50% to 72%, and monthly RSI climbing from 41 to 51.Two Different 50-Week Lines Are in CirculationThe level PlanB cites does not match the figure appearing elsewhere this month.Glassnode and technical coverage through September have placed the 50-week simple moving average at $81,081, where Bitcoin was rejected at an $81,265 intraday high in late August and has not cleared since. The 50-week exponential moving average sits lower at $77,430. Bitcoin reclaimed that line on Monday, lost it Tuesday when price fell below $75,000, and recovered it again this week. The EMA weights recent prices more heavily, which pulls it down during a drawdown and makes it the first line reclaimed on a recovery. The SMA is the slower, more demanding test.At $78,000, Bitcoin sits above the EMA and below the SMA. Which line counts determines whether the reclaim has happened, and PlanB's $79,000 figure matches neither exactly. The Underlying Indicators Are VerifiableThe supporting data is stronger than the level dispute suggests.Supply in profit rising from 50% to 72% is a substantial shift. That metric tracks what share of circulating Bitcoin was acquired below the current price, and a 22-point move means a large cohort of holders has crossed from underwater to profitable. It is also a lagging measure. Supply in profit rises mechanically as price rises, so it confirms the move rather than predicting the next one.Monthly RSI moving from 41 to 51 crosses the midpoint that separates bearish from bullish momentum on that timeframe. Monthly RSI is slow enough that the crossing is meaningful, though a reading of 51 is barely above neutral. The $89,000 Target Requires Clearing the Supply Wall FirstWhatever the 50-week line is worth, the obstacle between here and $89,000 is well documented.Glassnode data shows nearly 8% of total supply was acquired between $80,000 and $82,000 — the largest concentration at any comparable range — with the US spot ETF cohort's average cost basis in the same band.Bitcoin reached $82,284 on September 4 and has not cleared it. FxPro's Alex Kuptsikevich placed the upper edge of the established range near $82,000.Roughly 8% of supply becoming profitable simultaneously creates the conditions for selling into strength, which is what "supply wall" describes. Clearing it requires sustained spot demand rather than leverage. The Demand Data Has Not Confirmed the CallSpot buying does not currently match the bullish read.CryptoQuant's spot demand metric sits at −145,000 BTC after nearly turning positive at −5,000 in late August, giving back roughly 70% of a month's improvement. The Coinbase premium index turned negative, indicating US institutional buyers paying below the global market.Spot Bitcoin ETFs shed $450 million on September 15, the heaviest single-day outflow since June 25, and the funds remain roughly $1 billion negative year-to-date.Positioning is light. Santiment showed BTC-denominated open contracts falling 13.5% between September 3 and 11 against a 5% price decline, leaving positioning about 20% below pre-rally levels.Blockware Intelligence's Mitchell Askew reads that as seller exhaustion — "anybody who was going to sell bitcoin based on events like these has already sold." The competing reading is that thin positioning means absent buyers as well as absent sellers, which produces the same chart with different implications. The Week Supplied Reasons for Both ReadingsBitcoin traded around $78,000 Friday in a third consecutive day of gains, with every major higher and none of the 40 most liquid coins down. The Fed delivered its first hike since 2023 with a dot plot pointing to just one more in 2026 — below the 75 basis points markets had priced. The SEC granted an innovation exemption for tokenized securities venues two days after the Clarity Act failed its Senate cloture vote 49-50.WTI fell more than 5% to below $96 and the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.96%, snapping an eight-day rising streak.Bitcoin is down 1.5% in September against a historical average of roughly 3% since 2013, and remains up about 32% for the quarter.PlanB's track record is mixed. His stock-to-flow model produced price targets that did not materialise across prior cycles, and the bottom call is a directional judgment rather than a model output.

Ric Edelman Says Bitcoin Buying Today Is Like Buying Amazon in 1999
Financial adviser and Edelman Financial Engines founder Ric Edelman said buying Bitcoin now is like buying Amazon in 1999 and predicted the cryptocurrency could reach at least $500,000 before 2030. According to ChainCatcher, Edelman said that if people worldwide allocated 1% of their assets to Bitcoin, the price would be $500,000, adding that his forecast may be conservative and the token could exceed that level sooner.

Edelman, a longtime Bitcoin advocate, said he was once booed when introducing Bitcoin to financial services peers in 2013, but now most people in traditional finance at least acknowledge that the asset has established itself. He also noted that Bitcoin was trading at about $76,522, up 1% over the past 24 hours, after posting its best August performance in years, though it remained well below its October all-time high of $126,080.

Iran Says It Is Ready to Escalate War That Trump Insists Will End After US Election
Iran is ready for a more intense war and will step up counterstrikes if the US keeps attacking its territory and infrastructure, a senior Iranian official told Bloomberg. Tehran has no intention of backing down in the face of an American naval blockade and strikes on its oil tankers, said the official, who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive matters, adding that while economic pain is increasing, the country's leaders see the war with the US as an existential threat that leaves little choice but to keep fighting. The comments come as hostilities show little sign of easing in the war's seventh month: Washington said one of its warships had to evade an Iranian attack overnight and that it destroyed five Iranian energy tankers in response, after which Tehran fired around 20 missiles at a Jordanian airbase used by the US and attacked more Navy and commercial vessels.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump played down concerns about rising oil prices and said the war would be over in weeks, telling reporters he thinks it will "end immediately after the election because they can't hold out any longer," referring to November's midterms. Still, the Wall Street Journal reported that top US officials including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have raised the prospect that Iran may not yield and the conflict could stretch through the rest of Trump's term, which ends in January 2029. The senior official said Iran has been rebuilding its military since the most intense fighting ended in April and has enough missiles for a lengthy conflict.

The tit-for-tat attacks have pushed energy prices higher, with Brent crude climbing above $100 a barrel Wednesday and extending its gain this year to around 65%, while US diesel pump prices hit a record last week — adding pressure on Trump before the Nov. 3 midterms. Bloomberg Economics' Dina Esfandiary wrote that many Iranian leaders believe the Trump administration responds only to threats and escalation and is more sensitive to a widening war ahead of the vote. New security chief Mohsen Rezaee said Iran has recalibrated its posture toward US ships and bases, while parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned the era of "proportionate responses" was over.

The war, which erupted when the US and Israel began strikes on Iran in late February, has settled into a stalemate as both sides jockey for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with no official peace talks in months. Wary of higher fuel prices and depleted interceptor stocks, the US is trying to avoid a return to full-on fighting and is instead squeezing Iran's economy through the blockade and threats against those that keep ties with Tehran, aiming to force Iran to reopen Hormuz and negotiate. The blockade has driven Iranian inflation to almost 90% and is rapidly weakening the rial. Some officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, favor talks but insist Washington first lift the blockade and return to the June Memorandum of Understanding, a ceasefire that quickly collapsed. Esfandiary said Iran's elites are debating whether to escalate or resist, but are deciding how to retaliate faster and more efficiently, suggesting a menu of responses aimed at imposing greater costs on the US.

Canada Slaps Tariffs of Up to 50% on US Goods, Risking Wider Trade War
Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of US products on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg, as Prime Minister Mark Carney bets that standing up to President Donald Trump will eventually strengthen Ottawa's hand with its biggest trading partner. Carney's government raised the import tax on many US steel items to 50% from 25% and applied levies to consumer goods including motorcycles, cosmetics and cheese from 12:01 a.m. New York time. The measure will hit US exporters hardest in states such as Michigan and Ohio, which do heavy business with Canada and host closely fought races in November's midterm elections.

It is a calculated risk for Carney, who a year ago removed many of the counter-tariffs his predecessor Justin Trudeau had put in place. Trump administration officials have repeatedly said they will not tolerate retaliation, noting that only Canada and China have used counter-tariffs, and have declined to specify how or when Trump might respond. Brian Clow, a former senior Canadian adviser on US relations under Trudeau, said the retaliatory tariffs are meant to make the trade war's cost real enough for American businesses and consumers that Washington sees an incentive to return to the table — adding that Canada wants the trade war to end, not to wage one.

The clash follows the collapse of weeks of talks that had appeared close to a deal; Trump announced a preliminary agreement on Aug. 18, but it fell apart within days, prompting mutual recriminations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent compared Canada to a "little yippy dog," while Trump called the currency imbalance "unacceptable" and threatened to bar sales of Bombardier jets in the US, despite the company's more than 2,800 US-based suppliers. US tariffs of 50% on about $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect Aug. 22, with Canada's counter-tariffs targeting a roughly equal amount. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has signaled more tariffs and even import bans are possible.

Public opinion favors Carney's stance, with a Nanos Research poll for Bloomberg finding nearly three-quarters rated his handling of the trade file as good or very good. Oxford Economics estimates the combined effect of US tariffs, Canadian retaliation and related federal support will cut Canadian output by about 0.3% from baseline. After the talks collapsed, Trump said he would raise auto tariffs to 50% from 25% and impose a 50% rate on auto parts from Jan. 1, though he has not formally implemented them. Carney said his government seeks a "durable" agreement and is ready to deal when the US is, but will not sign unless Canada's automotive, steel and aluminum industries stay competitive. House Speaker Mike Johnson also called for talks to resume.

Asian Shares Mixed As Oil Rises On Gulf Tensions
Asian shares were mixed on Monday as a strong US jobs report supported the outlook for global growth, while oil prices edged higher after attacks on ships in the Gulf, according to RTHK.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index opened up 2 points, or 0.01 percent, at 25,652 before turning lower in early trading. The tech index opened down 11 points, or 0.26 percent, at 4,558, while the China enterprises index fell 6 points, or 0.08 percent, to 8,548.

The Shanghai Composite Index opened up 12 points, or 0.32 percent, at 3,942. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 88 points, or 0.65 percent, to 13,605, and the ChiNext Index gained 39 points, or 1.21 percent, to 3,326.

Brent crude added 0.2 percent to US$96.45 a barrel, while US crude rose 0.4 percent to US$91.85 a barrel. The move came after Tehran said it would announce a restricted zone outside the Strait of Hormuz in coming days after US forces hit three Iranian tankers and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy ships.

The report also said the European Central Bank is seen as certain to lift rates to 2.75 percent on Thursday, with futures implying a 75 percent chance of another hike to 3 percent by December. On Wall Street, S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures were fractionally lower during a US holiday.
