Quantinuum Quantum Breakthrough Uses 54 Qubits ⚛️

Researchers have demonstrated a new route toward universal quantum computing using Quantinuum’s H2 processor. The University of Chicago-led work used 54 qubits to manipulate non-Abelian anyons, exotic quantum objects whose braiding and fusion can perform the operations required for universal quantum computation.

The experiment combined braiding with fusion, extending what can be achieved through braiding alone. Researchers say the approach could provide greater flexibility for quantum algorithms, although the work remains at the research stage. 🔬

For Quantinuum, the result adds another demonstration of the capabilities of its trapped-ion hardware. The H2 system served as the experimental platform for the study, giving researchers a physical environment to test these complex quantum operations. ⚙️

🚨 SEC Just Drew a New Line for Crypto Tokens.

The U.S. SEC just released fresh staff FAQs that could have major implications for how crypto projects handle token buybacks, network upgrades, and marketing.

The key detail?

For a functioning crypto network, the SEC staff says announcing a token buyback does not automatically make the token a security.

The same goes for developing or improving an already-functional network. Maintaining, upgrading, or expanding the network generally isn't treated as the kind of managerial effort that creates an investment contract.

But there’s an important catch.

If a network isn't functional yet and the project sells investors on a buyback as a source of returns, the analysis can change.

That distinction matters because token buybacks have become an increasingly common part of crypto token economics.

The SEC also clarified that marketing a network's existing utility generally doesn't create an expectation of profit by itself — although the specific facts of each project still matter.

Meanwhile, the CFTC separately updated its guidance to allow regulated derivatives firms to use certain tokenized versions of permitted assets and blockchain-based records under existing requirements.

The bigger picture is hard to miss: U.S. regulators are increasingly building rules around how crypto actually works instead of treating the entire sector as one giant category.

CoinMarketCap has completed its acquisition of CoinGlass, bringing open interest, funding rates, liquidations and options data into its crypto market-data ecosystem. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

CoinGlass covers 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 instruments, while CoinMarketCap says its platform reaches 115 million users monthly. That means derivatives positioning could become much easier to access alongside the spot prices traders already track. 📊

🚨 $352M Crypto Security Shock — Bitget Just Got Hit.

Bitget has confirmed a major security breach involving approximately $351.6 million in unauthorized transfers from some of its hot wallets.

The incident was detected at 18:31 UTC on September 24. Bitget says the breach was limited to parts of its hot and warm wallet infrastructure, while its cold wallets remain secure.

Affected assets reportedly include Ether, XRP, BNB, Avalanche, USDT, USDC and other tokens across multiple networks.

Bitget temporarily suspended withdrawals while its security team investigates. Deposits and trading remain operational, and the exchange says user account balances are accurate.

The bigger number catching attention: Bitget says its User Protection Fund currently holds more than $464 million, enough to cover the estimated affected amount if necessary.

But the incident highlights a bigger issue for crypto exchanges.

Billions of dollars can sit behind a few layers of wallet infrastructure, and one compromised component can potentially create a massive security event.

Bitget says law enforcement and blockchain security firms are involved, with a full incident report expected as the investigation progresses.

For traders, this is another reminder that exchange security isn’t just about the platform you trade on — it’s about how that platform protects assets behind the scenes.
