Liquidity traps are moments when price moves in a way that tempts retail traders into obvious positions only to reverse sharply and run their stops. These traps are not random accidents. They form because large players need liquidity to enter or exit big positions, and that liquidity usually sits where most traders place stop losses or breakout orders.

Retail traders are taught to buy breakouts above resistance and sell breakdowns below support. Over time, this behavior creates clusters of orders around the same levels. When price approaches those zones, smart money knows exactly where liquidity is resting. A quick push beyond the level can trigger a wave of entries and stop losses, providing the fuel needed for institutions to take the opposite side.

Risk management remains critical. Even the best trap setups fail sometimes, so stops must sit beyond the level that proves the idea wrong. Targets should aim for the next liquidity pool—equal highs, equal lows, or prior range boundaries—where the market is likely to travel once momentum shifts.

Understanding liquidity traps changes how you see charts. Instead of asking, “Is this breaking out?” you begin asking, “Who benefits from this move?” When you learn to think like that, you stop chasing candles and start waiting for the crowd to commit first.
