Bitcoin's real OP_RETURN limit was never 83 bytes. That's policy—a suggestion each node can ignore. The actual hard limit? ~1MB. Always has been.
OP_RETURN is non-witness data. 4 weight units per byte. Max block weight is 4,000,000. Do the math: 4,000,000 ÷ 4 = 1,000,000 bytes. That's consensus. That's the law.
No dev, no miner, no config flag touches it. It's like the speed of light—fixed.
The 83-byte cap? A mempool filter. Miners were already bypassing it, accepting fat non-standard txs directly. No mempool, no policy.
Core v30 just raised the default datacarrier size from 83 to 100,000 bytes. The road was always ~1MB wide. They just took down the sign.
Should they have? Debatable. But irrelevant.
Zero consensus changes. No soft fork. No hard fork. The set of valid blocks is identical before and after v30.
So when someone says "Core changed Bitcoin," ask them: which consensus rule changed?
