According to Jin10, Labour MPs warned that the UK’s pledge to revive industry may be difficult to fulfill because current policies do not match the government’s statements and continue to favor services over manufacturing. Prime Minister Burnham has made industrial revival a core priority and said he wants to boost economies across the UK, create jobs, and develop areas beyond city centers. Days before Chancellor John Healey was due to present his first budget, Burnham also promised to publish a 10-year plan for the UK in the coming weeks. Labour MPs voiced dissatisfaction with the slow pace and lack of ambition in the industrial revival effort, saying ministers appeared not to have reached agreement on investing in sectors beyond urban services. Andy McNair, chair of the Labour Reindustrialization Research Group, said the UK had long adhered to an economic orthodoxy favoring a service-based economy and cheap imports to meet demand. He added that manufacturing jobs were widely popular, but the government remained focused on GDP growth driven mainly by cities.
