Why oracle prices matter to lending markets Lending protocols need estimates of collateral and debt values to calculate borrowing capacity and liquidation conditions. Smart contracts cannot simply browse websites, so protocols use oracle systems to deliver external prices on-chain.
Oracle design includes data sources, update frequency, aggregation methods, and safeguards. If a price is stale, inaccurate, manipulated, or unavailable, a protocol may miscalculate collateral value. This can enable excessive borrowing, trigger inappropriate liquidations, or prevent the system from responding correctly.
Low liquidity in the underlying market can also make some prices easier to distort. An attractive interface does not remove dependence on the data infrastructure behind it.
When evaluating a lending protocol, ask which oracle it uses, which markets inform the price, how often it updates, what happens when data becomes stale, and whether fallback mechanisms exist.
