Software Paying Software, Without A Subscription 🪙
$TAO and $RENDER both built markets for machine resources and both still bill humans for them. x402 is the piece that closes that gap.
It is the HTTP 402 status code, the one reserved for payment required since the nineties and never used, turned into a working micropayment rail. Bankr supports it on Base with custom ERC-20 pricing, so a call can cost a fraction of a cent.
The reason this matters is that subscriptions do not fit machines.
A subscription is a human abstraction. It assumes a relationship, a billing cycle, a renewal decision and somebody to make it. An agent calling an API eleven thousand times in an afternoon and never again does not fit any of that.
Per call pricing does. The agent pays for exactly what it consumed, the provider gets paid without onboarding anyone, and no account exists between them.
That is what makes an agent to agent economy possible rather than theoretical. Services can be sold to buyers who cannot sign contracts.
The honest state of it is early. Standards work is ongoing, adoption is uneven, and most of the interesting applications have not been built yet.
But the pattern is right. Machines need a payment primitive sized for machines, and this is the first one that looks like it fits.
