Solana will activate Alpenglow, its largest consensus upgrade to date, on October 21 at about 14:50 UTC, cutting finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds. The market has not rewarded the countdown: SOL is down more than 10% on the week, and fund outflows have continued. Macro adds noise too, with the Fed meeting on October 27–28 and hot inflation data keeping rate-hike odds alive.
The daily chart shows why. SOL trades near 104.4, below both the EMA9 (108.0) and EMA21 (110.8), with the faster average now under the slower one. RSI is at 38.7 and the MACD histogram is negative. The nearest supports are the Bollinger lower band (101.4) and the EMA200 (97.7), with the mid-September lows in the mid-90s behind them.
On the 4H chart, price bounced from about 101 on October 15 but was rejected at the EMA21 (106.1) and sits near 104.8. The bands are tightening, and the 4H EMA200 at 110.3 lines up almost exactly with the daily EMA21 near 110.8, which creates a resistance cluster around 110–111.
Alpenglow is a technical milestone, not a guaranteed price catalyst. Execution risk is real given Solana’s history of outages, and on-chain analysts warn that reported transaction counts could dip temporarily after the switch. A smooth migration would support the speed narrative; a stumble would hit it where it hurts. Until price reclaims 110, the trend is defined by lower highs; below 101, the next test is the EMA200.
