U.S. Inflation Reaches 3.7%: Why the Details Matter for Crypto

15 October 2026, Pakistan time. Based on September’s CPI report, released on 14 October at 5:30 p.m. PKT.

The latest U.S. inflation report gave investors plenty to think about. Fuel prices rose sharply, annual inflation accelerated, and core inflation came in above expectations. Together, those developments put the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision firmly in focus.

Here are the four main readings:

The actual figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The forecast column uses expectations reported by Trading Economics. Monthly readings are seasonally adjusted; annual readings are not.

Annual headline inflation increased by 0.3 percentage points, from 3.4% to 3.7%. Monthly core inflation matched August’s pace, but exceeded the forecast by 0.1 percentage point. The expected monthly headline increase therefore arrived alongside stronger-than-expected underlying inflation.

Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% during September, accounting for more than half of the overall monthly CPI increase. Shelter rose 0.4%, used cars and trucks 0.7%, and airline fares 1.2%. Overall food prices were unchanged. Energy was the largest contributor, while several other categories also became more expensive.

Core CPI excludes food and energy. Its stronger-than-expected reading matters because it gives policymakers more reason to examine whether price pressure is becoming persistent beyond fuel.

There is also a household story behind these market-moving numbers. In a separate release, BLS reported that inflation-adjusted average hourly earnings for employees on private nonfarm payrolls fell 0.5% during September and 0.7% over the year. That measures purchasing power: an average worker’s earnings bought less after accounting for inflation. It does not establish that every worker’s nominal pay fell.

The Fed already raised its policy-rate target by a quarter of a percentage point to 3.75%–4.00% on 16 September. This inflation may report strengthens the case for keeping policy restrictive and keeps another increase under consideration. The October decision remains open.

One detail deserves care: the Fed’s 2% longer-run inflation goal uses the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, or PCE. CPI and PCE measure inflation differently. September’s 2.6% core CPI reading should therefore be identified correctly when discussing the Fed’s target. Employment and economic conditions also matter to the decision.

Markets reacted as investors reconsidered the outlook for rates. Reuters reported that U.S. stocks declined, the dollar strengthened and Treasury yields rose following the release. Gold also fell in its October 14 market report. Those observations describe the reported reaction; they do not establish what happens next.

For $BTC and $ETH , interest rates and demand for risk are the important links.

Higher yields make interest-bearing assets more competitive, while tighter financial conditions can reduce investors’ willingness to hold speculative assets. A 2023 IMF working paper found that U.S. monetary tightening affected crypto prices through this risk-taking channel. It provides historical context, rather than a forecast for this particular report.

September’s inflation data creates a less supportive near-term backdrop for crypto. Continued strength in the dollar and rising yields could add pressure. Falling yields, improving inflation data or stronger crypto-specific demand could change that picture. Bitcoin’s next move will depend on how those forces develop together.

The next scheduled inflation release is September’s Producer Price Index on 15 October. The Federal Reserve meets on 27–28 October. Producer-price data and the Fed’s subsequent comments will offer more information about the policy outlook.
