🚹 SOLANA JUST SET A DATE FOR ITS BIGGEST CONSENSUS UPGRADE

Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade is scheduled for October 21, targeting transaction finality in around 150 milliseconds.

Why does this matter? Finality is the point when a transaction is considered irreversible. If Alpenglow delivers its target, payments, trading applications and cross-chain operations could receive stronger confirmation much faster.

The upgrade is designed to replace Solana’s existing TowerBFT consensus system and move validator voting off-chain. That could also reduce reported transaction counts—even if real user activity stays the same.

One important detail: 150 milliseconds is the target, not a guarantee of actual performance under every network condition. Validators also need to prepare their software for the transition.

This is more than a speed headline. It’s a major change to how Solana reaches agreement across its network.

The next milestone is the scheduled October 21 rollout.
