⚡ Solana Just Halved Block Times—but It Doesn’t Double Throughput

Solana’s 200-millisecond slots are now live on mainnet, completing a rollout that cut the target block interval from 400ms to 200ms.

LIVE / CONFIRMED: Solana can now target five block-production opportunities per second instead of 2.5. The upgrade also reduces the blockhash expiration window from 60 seconds to about 30 seconds.

But here’s the catch: faster slots do not automatically double transaction capacity. Each block now carries 30 million compute units, down from 37.5 million at 250ms, keeping theoretical processing capacity roughly unchanged.

There’s one detail worth watching: Alpenglow. Solana’s next consensus upgrade targets about 150ms finality, down from 12.8 seconds, but it remains in development with no confirmed mainnet date.

The takeaway: Solana is getting faster at producing blocks, while the real capacity and finality leap depends on Alpenglow—not the 200ms rollout alone.
