PANews reported on October 10 that Elon Musk said his Terafab manufacturing project would be capable of producing 1 terawatt of computing power, but semiconductor experts said the goal would be difficult to achieve. According to PANews, industry sources said chip manufacturing has a very high barrier to entry, and achieving stable yields at Terafab may be more difficult than sending Starship to Mars.
Samsung executives said strength in the chip manufacturing industry depends on knowledge accumulated over years of improving yields, a complex process. They added that reaching mass-production yield levels and maintaining the best combination of process steps would take at least 30 years. Hanwha Securities analyst Park Joon-yong said Terafab is intended to supply chips for applications ranging from aerospace to autonomous vehicles and robots. Intel's chip production experience was described as important for Tesla and SpaceX because it could help Terafab develop a production system faster without spending years building the technology from scratch.
