Crypto’s next security problem may not come from quantum computers. It could come from AI moving faster than cryptography can adapt.

Ethereum co founder Vitalik Buterin is warning that rapid AI progress in mathematics could weaken cryptographic systems sooner than the industry expects. He specifically highlighted ECDSA, used across major crypto wallets, while also questioning the long-term security of lattice based systems such as ML-DSA and FHE.

There is no confirmed break or active exploit right now. That distinction matters. Buterin’s concern is about AI accelerating mathematical discoveries that could eventually reduce the security margin behind today’s cryptography. He also warned users not to rush into wallet migrations, because mistakes during upgrades can create immediate losses.

My take: This is a long term infrastructure risk, not a reason to panic sell ETH or BTC. The real signal is whether blockchain developers can prepare secure upgrade paths before a breakthrough happens.

If AI keeps accelerating, is crypto’s security infrastructure adapting fast enough?
