French inflation rises more than expected, driven mainly by energy
đ Franceâs preliminary HICP inflation rose 3.4% YoY in September, up from 2.6% in August and above the 3.1% forecast. Domestic CPI also accelerated to 3.0%, showing a clear pickup in price pressures.
⥠Energy was the main driver, with prices rising 21.2% YoY from 16.7% previously. Services inflation also edged up from 1.9% to 2.2%, though this is not yet enough to suggest a broad surge in underlying inflation.
đ Meanwhile, household spending fell 0.5% in August, indicating that domestic demand remains weak. This makes the current inflation picture look more like a cost shock than an overheating economy.
đŠ The data adds pressure on the ECB ahead of its late-October meeting, especially as inflation remains elevated across several euro-area economies. These are still preliminary figures, with the final release due on October 15.
