What if gold’s real story right now isn’t inflation — but confidence in the system behind the dollar?

Gold edged 0.2% higher to around $4,599/oz today as investors positioned ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech. The bigger tension is clear: U.S. PCE inflation is still running at 3.7%, while markets now price only a 36% chance of a September hike.

But here’s what caught my attention.

Treasury buybacks, rising debt concerns and uncertainty around Fed policy are feeding fresh dollar-debasement fears — exactly the environment where gold starts looking less like a trade and more like insurance.

So the real question is: what happens if Warsh fails to restore confidence tomorrow?

Gold may not need a dovish Fed to move higher.

It may only need markets to lose faith in the dollar.
