I've been noticing that in crypto, the hardest thing to decentralize may not be money, but trust. TermMax describes itself as a decentralized protocol for fixed-rate borrowing, lending, and options trading. On the surface, that sounds like another technical evolution in DeFi. But the more I watch these systems, the more I think the interesting question is what users are actually being asked to trust. TBV can reduce custodial trust, but that doesn't mean trust disappears. Users still rely on protocol cryptography, Bitcoin and Ethereum security, underlying DeFi applications, and, at least temporarily, governance or emergency multisig keys. These aren't necessarily flaws. They are simply the remaining trust assumptions. I've been wondering how communities process that distinction. Marketing often compresses a complicated system into words like “trustless” or “decentralized,” while technical reality is usually much more conditional. And perhaps that's where the human side becomes important. People don't evaluate systems only through code. They evaluate who has power, who can intervene, what happens during an emergency, and whether the people behind the system can be trusted to act within the rules. The deeper question, then, may not be whether trust disappears. It may be whether users still feel comfortable after they've fully understood where trust remains.
