South Korea’s Financial Services Commission is considering a formal market making framework for virtual assets. The discussion follows a sharp JPYC price spike on Upbit, where the yen-linked token reportedly jumped from 12 won to 37.6 won within an hour amid limited liquidity.

Why it matters: Market makers can help narrow bid-ask spreads, improve order-book depth and reduce sudden price gaps. However, without strict oversight, the same activity can create conflicts of interest or increase the risk of market manipulation. The framework is still under consideration, not an approved policy.

My Take: Clear rules could help build confidence in South Korea’s crypto market, but transparency, capital requirements and strong monitoring will be just as important as liquidity. I’ll be watching how the proposal develops under the country’s broader digital-asset legislation.
