What Is Horizen?
Horizen started in 2017 as ZenCash, a privacy-focused fork of Zcash. It rebranded to Horizen in 2018 and built a multi-layered ecosystem with sidechains, encrypted messaging (ZenChat), and decentralized publishing (ZenPub) .
But the real story is what happened in 2025.
The Big Pivot
In July 2025, Horizen completed a full migration. It moved from being an independent Layer-1 blockchain to becoming a Layer-3 privacy appchain built directly on Base (Coinbase's Layer-2). ZEN is now an ERC-20 token on Base, not a standalone chain .
This is a complete architectural reinvention.
