UAW initiates a strike😲

Rising cost of living and sticky wages were a main theme in the United Auto Workers (UAW) union’s 150k-member strike against Detroit’s ‘Big 3’ automakers (Gm, Ford, Stellantis), the most significant labour turmoil in decades. The existing labour contracts will expire on Sep 14, and UAW leader Shawn Fain has threatened a simultaneous strike against all 3 automakers should they fail to reach a deal by then, where the workers have led with an aggressive opening position of a shorter, 32-hour workweek and a 46% hourly wage increase over 4 years. Unsurprisingly, the loom strike has weighed on auto-stocks since July, and might prove to be a bigger headwind for overall sentiment if the negotiations head into an impasse.
