China’s economy grew 4.5% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 4.3% in Q2 and exceeding the 4.4% forecast in a Reuters survey. The National Bureau of Statistics reported 4.6% growth for the first nine months of the year, within the government’s 4.5% to 5% annual target. Quarter-on-quarter growth reached 1.2%.

The underlying data were mixed. Industrial output rose 5.5% in September, while retail sales increased 1.1%. Fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% over January to September, and property investment declined 20.6% over the same period. Export strength continued to contrast with weaker domestic investment and consumption.
