Inflation just said "not so fast."

September's U.S. CPI came in hotter than expected, and markets repriced the Fed's path almost instantly. Traders are now leaning harder toward an October hike, with more tightening priced in through 2027. Equity futures and gold slipped, yields and the dollar pushed higher, and crypto traders are glued to the screen.

Here's what happened and why Warsh's speech today could set the tone for the next two weeks.

The Numbers That Moved Markets

✔︎ Headline CPI: 3.7% YoY (expected 3.6%, prior 3.4%)

✔︎ Monthly CPI: +0.6%, in line with forecasts

✔︎ Core CPI: 2.6% YoY (expected 2.5%, prior 2.4%) and +0.3% MoM (expected 0.2%)

Gasoline did most of the heavy lifting, jumping 9.1% on the month and more than 34% from a year ago. Energy overall rose 5.2% month over month. But it wasn't only fuel. Core services and shelter stayed sticky too. This was the last major inflation print before the October 27–28 FOMC meeting.

How Markets Reacted

➤ U.S. index futures sold off

➤ Gold dropped, then recovered part of the loss as yields eased

➤ Treasury yields jumped, and the 10-year briefly pushed higher before pulling back

➤ The dollar index strengthened

Bitcoin held near the $82,000 zone, showing its usual sensitivity to rate expectations. Higher real yields and a firmer dollar remain short-term headwinds for crypto until the Fed's direction becomes clearer.

Rate-Hike Bets Heat Up

Right after the release, traders boosted their October hike odds. Those odds cooled from the initial spike, settling roughly in the high 20s to mid 30s percent range depending on the venue. Still, markets are pricing in meaningful further tightening, including several more moves by the end of 2027. The "higher for longer" story just got fresh fuel.

All Eyes on Warsh Today

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks at the IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok at around 11:30 Beijing time on Friday (10:30 Bangkok, late Thursday evening in the U.S.). It's his final scheduled public appearance before the quiet period ahead of the October 27–28 meeting.

Will he turn more hawkish after this CPI? Will he keep October on the table, or stress patience given the labor market? Every word will be picked apart for hints on whether the Fed moves this month or waits until December.
