US Inflation Surprises Markets — Why Gold Is Under Pressure

The latest US inflation report has given financial markets another reason to remain cautious.

September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year, compared with 3.4% in August. Core CPI also moved higher to 2.6%. The numbers suggest that inflation is not cooling as smoothly as investors had hoped.

But there is more to this report than the headline figure.

Energy is a major part of the story.

US gasoline prices jumped sharply during September, contributing significantly to the increase in overall inflation. Meanwhile, core CPI rose 0.3% month over month, the same pace recorded in August.

In other words, underlying inflation has not accelerated on a monthly basis, but it has also failed to show the improvement markets were expecting.

Why are precious metals reacting?

Gold came under immediate selling pressure following the release. The concern is that persistent inflation could keep US interest rates higher for longer.

That scenario can support the dollar and Treasury yields, making non-yielding assets such as gold less attractive in the short term.

What about Bitcoin and the wider crypto market?

The next move will depend partly on how traders reassess the Federal Reserve's policy outlook. A stronger dollar and tighter financial conditions can weigh on risk appetite, although Bitcoin does not always move in line with gold or interest-rate expectations.

For now, the important signal is whether monthly core inflation starts to ease in the coming reports.

One inflation release can change market expectations, but it does not establish a long-term trend on its own.

The key question: Will inflation begin cooling again, or should markets prepare for interest rates to stay elevated for longer?
