Binance funding just hit its lowest reading since January.

Shorts are leaning into tomorrow's CPI — and that's exactly the kind of fuel a short squeeze runs on.

The September CPI drops Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Consensus: 3.7% headline (up from 3.4%), 2.5% core. The number matters. But here's what matters more: where everyone is positioned.

The liquidation map

Price is parked near $82–83K — right on top of Glassnode's biggest downside cluster band (~$81.7K–$83.3K). Break below $82K and the next long-liq zone points at $80K, then the heavier band near $75K. Look up instead: shorts' pain starts at the $86.5K ask block, with the big cluster running $87.1K–$95.9K. That's a lot of fuel sitting above a price that refuses to die.

Funding tells the same story. CryptoQuant's ArabChain has Binance BTC funding at -0.00215 — lowest since January, far under the 30-day average. Binance futures open interest is ~15% below its 30-day peak. Translation: longs got flushed ($1.18B liquidated on Oct 8, per Bitfinex Alpha), shorts piled in, and the book is cleaner than it's been in weeks.

Watch the $BTC chart here — the $82K–$82.5K zone is where this week gets decided. Hold it into CPI and the path of max pain points up. Lose it on a hot print and $80K comes fast.

The institutional bid has stepped back

U.S. spot ETFs bled roughly $679M last week, with Oct 7's -$484.9M the biggest single-day redemption since June (Farside). One green day — Oct 9, +$21.1M — is the whole offense. Nobody is front-running the number with size. And exchange reserves sit at ~2.68M BTC, the lowest since 2023 — coins keep leaving exchanges, but spot buyers aren't showing up yet.

If CPI shocks hot, $ETH and high-beta alts bleed first — that's the risk-off playbook every time.

History says respect both sides

The last CPI days are a warning to both camps. September 2025's soft print shot BTC to $112K, then round-tripped it within hours — a textbook bull trap. February 2025's hot CPI dumped BTC to $94,250; a soft print two weeks later wiped $270.6M in BTC shorts. August 2026 printed a $732M two-way liquidation day. The first spike after the print fades. Fast.

So the trade isn't guessing the number — it's knowing the map. Soft CPI plus real spot buying: break above $84.5K, and $87.5K becomes the squeeze trigger (Bitfinex Alpha's line). Hot CPI: $80K retest, and below that, $77.4K.

Position light, let CPI detonate the map, then check the $BTC chart right after the print — that's where the real move reveals itself.
