Bitcoin is holding near $86,000 as October begins with the market watching a major shift in institutional flows. BTC has gained about 3.7% over the past seven days, while the latest data shows that the huge ETF inflows seen in late September have slowed sharply.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $241 million in net inflows last week, marking a third consecutive week of positive flows. But the number is a major slowdown from the previous week's $2.4 billion inflow. The message is clear: institutional demand is still positive, but the pace has cooled.

Ethereum is showing a different picture. U.S. spot Ether ETFs recorded roughly $138 million in weekly outflows after attracting about $690 million the previous week. Zcash funds also recorded their first weekly outflow, while Solana and XRP ETFs continued to post smaller positive flows.

Bitcoin's price strength is therefore happening alongside a quieter ETF market. Glassnode reports that weekly U.S. spot ETF netflows fell sharply, while ETF trading volume also declined. At the same time, on-chain activity and new capital entering the Bitcoin market remain elevated.

The macro picture is also supporting the current market narrative. Weaker-than-expected U.S. employment data has reduced expectations for another Federal Reserve rate hike in October, helping risk assets including Bitcoin. Bitcoin reached around $86,200 on Monday as investors reassessed the rate outlook.

The key question now is whether Bitcoin's price strength can continue while institutional ETF demand remains slower. A market with rising prices but cooling ETF flows tells a different story from the powerful inflow-driven move seen in late September.

Pro Tip: Watch ETF netflows together with Bitcoin's price and on-chain activity. When those indicators move in the same direction, the market narrative becomes easier to understand. When they diverge, volatility and uncertainty often become more important.

October is starting with Bitcoin near the upper end of its recent range, but institutional demand is no longer moving at September's pace. For crypto watchers, the next ETF flow reports could reveal whether the current strength is the beginning of another expansion or simply a pause after a strong recovery.
