The Independent Community Bankers of America sued the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday, challenging its authority to charter national trust banks for cryptocurrency firms. The complaint asks a federal court to declare unlawful a March 2, 2026 final rule and the OCC's Interpretive Letter No. 1176. ICBA argues that the charters give crypto firms federal banking credibility without the obligations and protections attached to insured depository institutions. ICBA also seeks to have Protego Holdings' conditional charter vacated.
