Japan has expanded sanctions against Russia over the continuing war in Ukraine, adding 33 organizations and nine individuals to its asset-freeze list. The sanctions include Russian cryptocurrency exchange Garantex, according to a joint statement from three Japanese ministries issued on Friday. The new measures also restrict services for 35 vessels identified as carrying Russian oil and helping Moscow evade sanctions. Japan aims to reduce Russia's crude oil export earnings. However, blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs said sanctions against entities such as Garantex may be ineffective because advance contingency plans allow rapid transfers to successor platforms.
