$W is one of the most brutal examples of how a strong crypto project can still have a weak token.
Wormhole is a major cross-chain messaging protocol, but its token has fallen more than 99% from its all-time high.
At around $0.0115, W has a market cap of ~$75M, ~$115M FDV and ~$55M in 24h volume.
So what is W actually used for?
Today, the main utilities are governance and staking. W holders can stake to participate in governance, with W 2.0 targeting a 4% base yield.
There is no new inflation under W 2.0. Supply is capped at 10B, with roughly 6.5B currently circulating.
W 2.0 also introduced the Wormhole Reserve, designed to channel protocol revenues and ecosystem value toward buying and locking W.
That sounds promising, but the market is clearly questioning how much value the token can actually capture.
The biggest problem is supply: around 35% of the maximum supply is still not circulating, meaning future unlocks remain an overhang.
A token from one of crypto's better-known interoperability projects trading down more than 100x from its peak is a brutal reminder:
A strong protocol does not automatically create a strong token.
