Between broadcasting a transaction and it landing in a block, it waits in the mempool - the set of transactions the network knows about but has not yet recorded.
This is where "pending" actually lives, and looking at it explains a lot. A crowded mempool means longer waits and higher fees for anyone who wants to skip the queue. It also means a transfer that has not confirmed is not necessarily lost or stuck forever; it may simply be underbidding. Understanding that turns a frightening silence into a queue position.
