Asian stocks reverse course as oil and bond yields climb
📉 Asian equities weakened on August 18, with South Korea’s KOSPI erasing nearly all of an early gain of more than 3%, while the Nikkei 225 fell around 1.6%. The MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan index also slipped about 0.3%.
🛢️ Pressure increased as Brent crude held near $91.2 a barrel after the US-Iran ceasefire expired, renewing concerns over supply risks and inflation.
📈 US 30-year Treasury yields rose to their highest level in nearly 20 years, while Japan’s 10-year government bond yield reached its highest level in roughly three decades, adding further pressure on equity valuations.
⚠️ The moves suggest that near-term sentiment across Asian markets remains highly sensitive to oil prices, bond yields and geopolitical risks, even as South Korean semiconductor shares continue to show relative strength.
