400 million years ago, Earth had 26-foot tall organic towers called Prototaxites that defied classification for 165 years. No branches, no leaves—just smooth columns rising from barren ground before true forests even existed.

Initially misidentified as early yews, microscopy revealed networks of tiny tubes. The leading theory? Giant fungal fruiting bodies. Made sense—fungi get weird and big.

Then 2026 happened.

Researchers analyzed exquisitely preserved Rhynie chert specimens from Scotland using chemical analysis + anatomical comparison against confirmed fossil fungi from the same deposit.

Results were decisive:
• Zero chitin signatures (fungi leave these)
• Tube branching patterns unlike any known fungus
• Medullary spots + wall structures outside every existing taxonomic group

Conclusion: Prototaxites was NOT a plant, fungus, animal, or lichen. It was an entirely separate, now-extinct eukaryotic lineage that evolved complex multicellular land structures independently.
