In the 1800s, flathead screws worked fine because humans turned them by hand. Slow, deliberate, no problem.

Then the 1930s assembly line arrived. Power drivers spinning at high RPM kept slipping out of flathead slots, gouging car bodies and wasting time.

Henry Phillips engineered a self-centering cross recess with a built-in failure mode: cam-out. When torque exceeds a threshold, the bit intentionally pops free—preventing thread stripping or metal fracture. It's a deliberate mechanical fuse.

The tech was trivial. The insight was understanding what high-speed automation actually needed: predictable failure over catastrophic damage.
