Scarcity Is Not Equal: How Supply Mechanics Differ Across Chains

Everyone knows $BTC has a 21 million hard cap. That story is well-told. What gets less attention is how supply-side mechanics vary dramatically across the broader ecosystem — and why it matters for long-term valuation.

$BTC : Pure, immutable scarcity. No exceptions. Every four years the issuance halves, compressing new supply while demand from ETF inflows and corporate treasuries continues expanding. The math is simple and that simplicity is the feature.

$ETH : Dynamic scarcity — not capped, but deflationary under load. EIP-1559 burns base fees, and since The Merge, issuance dropped ~88%. In high-activity environments, ETH becomes net deflationary. This is programmable scarcity tied to actual utility demand — structurally different from and arguably more responsive than a fixed cap.

ADA: Controlled emission with a treasury split. About 20% of each epoch reward funds the Cardano treasury for ecosystem development. Scarcity here is balanced against long-term protocol sustainability — supply management that funds growth rather than purely compresses.

XRP: Pre-minted, escrow-released supply. 55 billion XRP sits in time-locked escrow. Predictable, but the scarcity narrative depends on transaction fee burns — a much slower mechanism.

The takeaway: scarcity is a spectrum, not a binary. Understanding the mechanism behind the headline number matters more than the number itself.
