I realized I had been thinking about managed onchain strategies too simply. I used to believe that giving a manager control over a strategy also meant giving them full control over the assets.
After spending more time understanding how @grvt_io approaches this, I noticed the permissions are separated. A strategy manager can make trading decisions, but withdrawals remain outside their control. That design made me think more carefully about how trust can be limited without removing the manager's role.
In my opinion, this is a meaningful improvement, but it does not eliminate investment risk. Better custody protection cannot guarantee better trading decisions. Investors still need to evaluate the person behind the strategy as much as the technology itself.

That sounds simple until you think about what it means for actual financial activity.
With Phoenix, amounts and transaction details can stay hidden, while the chain still checks that the transaction is valid.
That’s a very different idea from just throwing encryption around.
Then there’s PLONK.
Dusk uses PLONK as a core proving system, with BLS12-381 underneath. The interesting bit is that the proof isn’t the product by itself. It’s the mechanism that lets Dusk keep sensitive information private while still giving validators something they can verify.
And Bulletproofs are part of the story too, but I wouldn’t put them on equal footing with PLONK today. They show up more in Dusk’s earlier confidential-transaction work. The stack has evolved.
What I actually find interesting is the tradeoff nobody likes talking about:
proofs cost computation.
Someone has to generate them.
Dusk has dedicated prover infrastructure for exactly that reason.

Dusk pitches itself as a privacy-focused layer-1 built for regulated financial applications. Confidential smart contracts, the XSC standard, selective disclosure, compliance tools—the idea is institutions can settle assets without dumping every detail onto a public ledger. They’ve even added an EVM layer so developers don’t have to start from zero. On paper the technical story holds up.
What stands out is how little of that narrative is showing up in actual usage. TVL is still thin, activity metrics stay modest, and the market still seems to be pricing the story more than any proven demand. Initial vesting wrapped up years ago, so the main supply pressure now is just the long, halving emissions schedule aimed at staking rewards. Steady rather than sudden.
The split is interesting. Issuers and venues could eventually use the privacy and settlement features without needing to hold large amounts of the token.
