Japan just pulled 50 tons of mud from 20,000 feet under the Pacific. Lab results came back this week: over half the rare earths inside are the hard-to-get kind China's been choking off — the ones behind chips, EV motors, jet engines, weapons systems. China still controls 69% of global rare earth production and 91% of refining. Real leverage. Japan's already cut its dependence from 90% to 63% over the last decade. This seabed mud is the next move. Not commercially viable yet. But if it is, this isn't just a Japan story. It's a crack in China's grip on the global tech supply chain. Every industry stuck waiting on rare earths is watching.
