OpenSea, one of the leading NFT marketplaces, has announced its decision to terminate support for NFTs built on the BNB Smart Chain (BSC). This news comes as a surprise to many users and industry observers, as OpenSea had initially embraced the BSC ecosystem with enthusiasm.
The announcement was made through a tweet posted on the official OpenSea Twitter account, where the platform explained its rationale for this decision. OpenSea cited the need to allocate resources more effectively towards the most promising blockchain endeavors as the primary factor behind the move. OpenSea acknowledged that the decision was not taken lightly, but ultimately the costs associated with supporting BSC outweighed the benefits it brought to the platform.
Last year, OpenSea ventured into expanding its supported blockchains by adding BNB Smart Chain due to the growing excitement within the wider NFT community. However, as the NFT ecosystem evolves and new technologies emerge, the platform’s strategy has shifted to focus on channels that align more closely with its long-term vision. While users will no longer be able to create new listings or offers for BSC-based NFTs, they can still explore, view, and transfer these assets on the OpenSea website.
OpenSea reinforced its commitment to the concept of a multi-chain future, even in light of this decision. Recent actions, such as adding support for Layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism, underscore OpenSea’s determination to stay at the forefront of innovation within the NFT ecosystem. By concentrating resources on a curated list of 10 supported blockchains, OpenSea aims to remain agile and responsive to the rapid advancements in the NFT space.
The reduction in the number of supported blockchains now brings OpenSea’s roster to ten: Arbitrum, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Base, Ethereum, Klaytn, Optimism, Polygon, Solana, and Zora. The departure of BNB Smart Chain, previously known as Binance Smart Chain, is a notable shift given its association with the crypto giant Binance.
