🌐 Bangladesh Is Sitting Out the Crypto Revolution — And It's Costing Us More Than We Think
The year is 2026. India regulates crypto. Indonesia regulates crypto. Pakistan is building a framework. The UAE has become a global crypto hub. Even Vietnam and the Philippines — our neighbours in development — have chosen to regulate rather than ban.
And Bangladesh? Still sitting on the sidelines. Still saying no.
This isn't a story about Bitcoin getting rich overnight. This is a story about a country that keeps choosing fear over the future.
It started back in 2014, when Bangladesh Bank issued its first warning against Bitcoin — framing it as a tool for money laundering and terrorism. By 2017, the stance hardened. Crypto was declared effectively illegal. Trade it, and you risk prison under the Money Laundering Prevention Act. The message was clear: stay away.
But here's what happened instead.
Bangladesh's young people didn't stay away. They found Binance. They found peer-to-peer trading through bKash and Nagad. They found stablecoins to receive freelance payments from abroad. Quietly, stubbornly, a crypto economy grew anyway — underground, unprotected, and unregulated. Today, Chainalysis ranks Bangladesh 13th in the world for crypto adoption out of 151 countries. Over 3 million Bangladeshis now hold crypto wallets. Binance alone reports more than 600,000 Bangladeshi users on its platform.
Let that sink in. A country that bans crypto is among the top 15 in the world for using it.
The ban didn't stop adoption. It just stopped protection. It stopped taxation. It stopped innovation. Every taka earned through crypto goes untaxed. Every transaction happens without consumer protection. Every scam victim has nowhere to turn. Meanwhile, economists estimate that if even a fraction of Bangladesh's $30 billion in annual remittances flowed through regulated crypto channels, families could save hundreds of millions in transfer fees alone.
The government knows blockchain works — it's already using it for land records and e-governance through the National Blockchain Strategy. But it refuses to extend that logic to the people.
The world isn't waiting for Bangladesh to be ready. It's already moved on.
And every year we spend banning instead of regulating, we lose tax revenue, we lose talent, we lose trust from a generation of young Bangladeshis who are building their financial futures outside the system — because the system left them no choice.
Bangladesh didn't ban crypto because it's dangerous. Every technology is dangerous without rules. We banned it because we didn't want to do the hard work of building those rules.
The question now isn't whether crypto is coming to Bangladesh. It's already here — just hidden.
The real question is: how long will we keep pretending it isn't?
