Yesterday something happened in my store that made me think a lot about the true value of things. A boy came in holding these two old banknotes (one of 1,000 Cruzados and the other of 500 Cruzeiros), wanting to buy candy. You could see in his innocence that he genuinely believed that money was still worth something. I knew those bills had been out of circulation for more than 30 years, but I looked outside and saw a group of boys waiting. They had sent the kid in just to make fun of him and laugh at his face when I said "no". Instead of ruining the boy’s innocence and letting him turn into a joke, I decided to change the ending of the story. I accepted the bills, did the math, and gave him what he wanted: 6 chocolates and 1 ice cream. The boy left with shining eyes and the sweets in his hands. But the most incredible part came right after. When the boys outside saw him leaving with the candy, the paper instantly turned into wealth for them as well! The joke lost its appeal and they were left frustrated. They ran to their parents’ house looking for more of those old banknotes to try to buy candy too, but soon they realized they no longer existed because of the scarcity. That’s when I understood it in practice: money itself is absolutely worth nothing—it’s just a piece of paper with a number printed on it. We are the ones who give it value through our trust. In the end, the boy who was supposed to be tricked came out as the smartest one; the pranksters left frustrated, and I was left with two notes full of history and a lesson that no economics book teaches.$#BTC $BTC
