The Fed faces political pressure as Trump prepares to choose a new president
The Federal Reserve began lowering interest rates three months ago, but instead of calming the markets, it stoked a fire beneath them.
Since the Fed's first rate cut in this cycle in September of 2024, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield has increased by 0.5 percentage points, now sitting at 4.1%, while the 30-year yield has jumped more than 0.8 percentage points, according to TradingView data.
Generally, when the Fed cuts, long-term yields also fall. Even during the two non-recessionary easing cycles in 1995 and 1998, when rates were reduced by only 75 basis points, the 10-year yield did not spike in this way.
Since the Fed's first rate cut in this cycle in September of 2024, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield has increased by 0.5 percentage points, now sitting at 4.1%, while the 30-year yield has jumped more than 0.8 percentage points, according to TradingView data.
