Markets change when technology gets faster. They change when it becomes too expensive to ignore the cost of coordinating trust between people.

The thing that is happening in Europe is really interesting. The big opportunity might not be about putting securities on a blockchain. Rather about rebuilding the entire workflow around securities.

What if issuance and investor eligibility and trading and custody and disclosure and settlement all happened in the system?

This is where Dusk and NPEX become really interesting. NPEX is a place where people can buy and sell securities. It is regulated. Dusk and NPEX are working together to see if they can use blockchain technology to make regulated markets better.

The big change here is in the architecture. Of just adding blockchain technology to the way financial things are done markets could actually become workflows that happen on a blockchain, with privacy and the ability to disclose information only to certain people built right in.

Regulation is a big question. Who gets to decide who can access the system and how much information should be shared with everyone?

If this way of doing things actually works regulated finance could become something that can be programmed and automated without giving up the rules that make people trust it. The strange thing about financial transparency is that too much of it can make a market less trustworthy. A system that reveals everything may prove honesty while simultaneously exposing the people using it.
That tension has followed blockchain since the beginning. Public ledgers make verification easy, but financial institutions cannot realistically publish every balance, transaction, or identity detail for everyone to inspect.
This is where I find Dusk interesting—not because it chooses privacy over transparency, but because it questions whether they need to be opposites at all.

Yesterday my boss did something that made me feel uncomfortable at the office. I decided to come home early. I started looking at my phone and saw an article about Dusk so I began reading it.
What really got my attention was not another story about how blockchain's going to change the way we do finance. It was a simple question: what happens when money and investments have to follow rules every step of the way?

When you buy or sell something that is regulated it is not about the buying and selling. There are a lot of things that have to happen, like checking who you are making sure you are allowed to own it keeping track of everything and finally getting your money back. Usually different groups of people handle these things. That can make it harder and more expensive.

The I learned about Dusk, the more I thought it was interesting. Dusk focuses on keeping things private making sure everyone follows the rules and creating a system that can be programmed. This makes me think that maybe we do not have to add rules after something is already being traded. Maybe we can make following the rules part of the process from the beginning.

This is a deal. Some people want to know everything that is going on while others need to keep things secret. The people who make the rules need to be able to see what is happening but businesses cannot just share all of their secrets with everyone.

Dusks way of doing things makes me ask a question: can we use blockchain to make sure everyone is following the rules without giving up our right to privacy when it comes to money?
