The upgrade's CAP-85 introduces externally managed contract executables. Instead of maintaining separate implementations across numerous contract instances, developers can create a shared executable reference. Updating that reference can change the implementation used by participating contracts atomically. This design is particularly relevant to protocols that operate large numbers of similar contracts. A conventional one-by-one upgrade can create a period in which some instances use newer code while others continue running older versions. Stellar says CAP-85 is designed to remove that inconsistency for contracts using the new architecture. Protocol 28 also introduces CAP-86, which focuses on data migration. Smart-contract applications frequently evolve their data structures as new features are added. The new sparse-map host functions are intended to make these migrations more flexible. The changes are opt-in for relevant smart-contract teams. Developers adopting the new capabilities need to rebuild against updated Soroban SDK versions.
