I really can't believe it: according to statistics from Japanese authorities, 3,533 Chinese citizens gave up their nationality and became Japanese in 2025. There are currently as many as 930,000 Chinese people in Japan, most of whom have not given up their nationality. Even more astounding, 9,258 people became Japanese citizens in 2025, and Chinese people made up over 30% of them. I wonder what these people are thinking. $ETH

A broken gourd is listed for 8.88 million yuan. They say it’s called a “Sky-Crack Gourd”—you wouldn’t find another one like it even across 100 or 1,000 mu of land, so they’re asking a high price. But honestly, that price is outrageous. Even if you made a gourd that big out of gold, it still wouldn’t be worth that much. It’s all hype. Maybe some sucker will come along and actually buy it. But some people wouldn’t buy it even if it were only 88 yuan! $ETH

Back in 2010, I went along with the trend and spent 120,000 yuan on this red rosewood dining table set. Everyone was saying rosewood prices went up every year and that it could be passed down as a family heirloom. My dad treasured it like crazy—he’d even insist on putting a tablecloth down whenever we ate. We’re moving to a new place these days, and it’s too small to fit the furniture, so I suggested selling it. But when a dealer came by to take a look, he offered just 20,000 yuan for both dining sets and the two nightstands. My dad’s face fell on the spot. He said he’d paid 120,000 yuan for it, and now, 15 years later, it was worth only a fraction of that. He refuses to sell it and would rather let it gather dust in storage. I think the rosewood market has been falling for years, and it’ll only be worth less as time goes on. Selling it now for 20,000 yuan would at least help us recoup some of the cost. But my dad is convinced it’ll appreciate in value, and whenever I try to talk him around, he gets mad at me. The furniture had already been loaded onto the truck when he called them to stop. If you were me, would you persuade him to sell while he still can, or go along with him and keep it? $ETH

I went grocery shopping today and saw that a bottle of Lao Gan Ma now costs 15 yuan. I decided to look up its prices over the past 20 years, and wow—seeing the numbers really hit me. Classic 280g fermented black bean chili sauce: 2005: 5 yuan per bottle 2010: 7 yuan per bottle 2012–2018: 9 yuan per bottle 2022 official price adjustment: 12 yuan per bottle Now, in 2026, at supermarkets: 15 yuan per bottle Back in school, it was the perfect thing to eat with rice. Now it’s getting so expensive I can barely afford it. $ETH

Shanghai locals have an unwritten little rule when attending banquets at local hotels: when the meal is nearly over, a certain dish is brought to the table, and everyone knows it means the meal is about to end. Can you guess what dish it usually is? $ETH

Someone buying old coins came to the market. I found out that a 1960 2-yuan banknote featuring a lathe worker could fetch 2,600 yuan each. I happened to have two, so I was thrilled. I hurried home to get them. The vendor carefully examined the 1960 2-yuan notes, even holding them up to the light. I didn’t know what he was looking for, but he said they were a bit worn and worth no more than 800 yuan each. I was stunned—how did the price go from 2,600 to 800? Wasn’t he trying to rip me off? Although I don’t know much about the market for old banknotes or exactly how much these 2-yuan notes are worth, I felt he was just making excuses to drive the price down. I hesitated, worried I’d sell them for too little, so I decided to hold on to them and not sell. I believe they’ll be worth more in the future. I’d like to ask those in the know: what’s the current market price for these two 1960 2-yuan banknotes featuring a lathe worker? I’d like to find out in advance! $ETH

Kokang is really only about the size of a county: 2,700 square kilometers, with a population of fewer than 200,000. The so-called major families are basically on the same level as a county leadership team. And the so-called armed forces amount to just one battalion—at most a few hundred people. These people could never have caused so much trouble in the first place. We were simply too bound by the rules. They fear force, not kindness. When you try to reason with them and follow the rules, they just think you're weak. They've all learned their lesson now, haven't they? $ETH

Have you noticed that every Three Kingdoms drama wraps up as soon as Shu Han falls? Nobody ever films the campaign to conquer Wu! The 1994 version skipped it, and so did the 2010 version. The other adaptations don’t even mention it. Why is that? Luo Guanzhong, too—your book was already so long, and you wrapped up the conquest of Wu in just one passage. Couldn’t you have written a couple more? Did you run out of ink, or suddenly get sleepy and decide to call it a night? The truth is, there really isn’t much to film about the conquest of Wu. The fall of Shu Han was tragic and heroic; the fall of Cao Wei was frustrating and undignified. But what about Eastern Wu? It had neither Zhuge Liang’s determination in making six campaigns to Mount Qi, nor Jiang Wei’s tragic nine expeditions into the Central Plains—and there was no earth-shattering final battle, either. “Wang Jun’s warships sailed down from Yizhou; the royal aura of Jinling faded away.” Turn one page, and the Three Kingdoms are over. One commenter said: Even Chen Shou, the author of Records of the Three Kingdoms, didn’t care for Eastern Wu—let alone the novel, film, or TV adaptations of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. When Records of the Three Kingdoms introduces Cao Cao and Liu Bei, it gives detailed, specific accounts right from the start. But when it gets to Sun Quan of Eastern Wu, it just says, “Sun Quan, courtesy name Zhongmou.” And that’s it. Why is Eastern Wu so unpopular? Is it simply because of the trick of “crossing the river in white clothes,” which led to the death of Guan Yu, the much-revered Lord Guan? $ETH

In the Ming dynasty, there was a weapon called the langxian, or “wolf’s-brush spear.” Put simply, it was a five-meter-long bamboo pole covered in sharp, backward-pointing branches, with a sharpened tip. It looked like junk, but it was specifically designed to counter Japanese samurai swords. Japanese pirates’ swords were fast and vicious. At close range, one swordsman could cut down five or six Ming soldiers. But no matter how fast your sword is, it can’t reach someone five meters away. The langxian’s branches tangled around the blade and snagged clothing. When a Japanese sword slashed at it, it got stuck among the bamboo branches and couldn’t be pulled free. That was when the spearmen behind the wielder thrust—and the fight was over. A finely forged steel samurai sword, taken down by a bamboo pole. That’s how war can be sometimes: it’s not about whose weapons are more expensive or better made, but who better understands “what you’re afraid of.” $ETH
