DuskDS — the foundation layer for Dusk’s financial blockchain
Previously, I often saw Layer 1 as simply a base layer for transactions to be confirmed and for smart contracts to function. But when I looked into DuskDS, I realized this approach is not enough if a blockchain wants to serve regulated financial markets.
DuskDS is the foundation layer of Dusk: a Layer 1 built for regulated financial markets, where blockchain must provide not only speed and settlement capability, but also solve the problems of privacy and compliance. It is also the platform for Dusk’s goal of bringing real-world assets tokenized (RWA) and regulated securities onto the chain.
What I find particularly noteworthy is how Dusk combines elements that seem, at first, contradictory. Privacy when needed, transparency when useful, and selective disclosure when the authorized party needs to verify. That means sensitive financial data doesn’t necessarily have to be fully exposed to the market, yet blockchain is not turned into a closed system.
At this foundation layer, Dusk aims for deterministic settlement—payments and the completion of transactions that are predictable and defined, rather than depending on complicated intermediary processes. In finance, this is a crucial point because the value of blockchain is not only in recording transactions, but also in the ability to handle an asset’s lifecycle in a trustworthy way.
So I started to see DuskDS not merely as the “backend” of Dusk. It’s more like the foundation for everything above it—from DuskEVM, privacy, and compliance to RWA and tokenized securities applications—to work within a single system.
