And when the accursed Yazid arrived at Karbala, on the 3rd of Muharram, Yazidi forces tore down Imam Husayn’s (peace be upon him) tents from beside the Euphrates.
And on the 7th of Muharram, Imam Husayn’s (peace be upon him) access to water was cut off.
⚔️ The Day of Ashura
On 10 Muharram, the Day of Ashura, Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and his companions offered a great sacrifice. They accepted apparent defeat but refused to bow before falsehood. The martyrdoms of the innocent ones—such as Hazrat Ali Akbar (peace be upon him), Hazrat Abbas the Standard-Bearer (peace be upon him), Qasim ibn Imam Hasan (peace be upon him), and the young Ali Asghar (peace be upon him)—were recorded in history in golden words.

When Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (peace be upon him) arrived in Kufa, the people of Kufa gave bay‘ah (pledge of allegiance) to Muslim ibn Aqeel. When this news reached Nu‘man ibn Bashir—who at that time was the governor of Kufa—and he saw that his plans could not succeed, Nu‘man ibn Bashir wrote a letter to Yazid to send ‘Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad as the governor of Kufa, because Ibn Ziyad knew very well the tricks, deceit, cunning, and politics. When Ibn Ziyad arrived in Kufa, the whole situation turned upside down. In a single day, he set up such a scheme that the group which had been with Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel at the time of Maghrib (sunset prayer) remained even by the morning prayer—none of it changed. Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (peace be upon him) was left alone, wandering in the streets of Kufa. And when Ibn Ziyad’s army surrounded Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (peace be upon him), Muslim ibn Aqeel alone sent all the Yazidi forces to Hell. With great cunning, the Yazidi army captured Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (peace be upon him). And then the accursed Ibn Ziyad pushed Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (peace be upon him) down from a tall building in Kufa. Thus, Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (peace be upon him) attained martyrdom.

When Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) was forced to give allegiance, he was compelled to leave Madinah Munawwarah—leaving behind his grandfather.
Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) set out, on the night of 28 Rajab al-Murajab, with the caravan of his noble family toward Makkah al-Mukarramah.
But even at the Ka‘bah, a Yazidi army arrived with the intention to martyr Imam Husayn (peace be upon him). Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) showed that the Ka‘bah is a place of safety and that blood should not be shed here.
