Bitcoin Core just changed how it handles security bugs, and it puts a clock on anyone still running an old node.
Until now, a fixed medium or high severity bug stayed quiet until the last affected version reached end of life, which usually meant about a year. That gave node runners time to upgrade before the details came out.
The policy update merged on Oct 22 adds a new category: bugs that are easy to find, including ones an AI can turn up with a simple prompt. For those, the plan is a point release for every maintained version as soon as possible, with the advisory published alongside it. No long wait. The reasoning is simple: if anyone can find the bug in minutes, keeping it secret protects nobody.
The catch is that only v29, v30 and v31 are maintained right now. By our count from the latest Bitnodes snapshot, 6,126 of 21,446 reachable Bitcoin Core nodes, about 29%, still run v28 or older. Those nodes won't get these patches, and the bug details will be public faster than before.
This isn't a $BTC price story. It's a reminder that running a node means updating it. If yours shows v28 or lower, now is a good time to move to a maintained release.
Heatbit's new Bitwater is an $899 heating element that mines $BTC while it heats your water tank. Out of the box it mines solo, and at today's difficulty a 34 TH/s machine finds a block about once every 560 years on average.
It swaps into the 1-inch element port on standard 30 to 80 gallon tanks in the US and Canada. Heatbit lists up to 34 TH/s at up to 600 W, 20 BM1370 chips, and shipping in Q1 2027. The $899 price is for the first Genesis batch; later batches go up to $1,299.
Solo on the Heatbit pool is the default setting. If a block hits, the whole reward is yours, but the odds at 34 TH/s are roughly 1 in 560 for any given year.
Pointed at a pool like Luxor instead, the same hashrate earns about $1.25 a day at today's numbers, around $455 a year. By our math that's roughly 2 years to earn back $899 running flat out, or about 2.5 years at 80% runtime. Price, difficulty and pool fees will all move that, and the next difficulty adjustment is currently tracking about +5%.
The heat isn't wasted, which is the whole pitch. Just know which mode it's in before you count on the income.
PEPE traded $548M in the last 24 hours. Shiba Inu, a coin worth 41% more, traded $48M.
PEPE is up 13% on the day and 24% on the week, per CoinGecko. CoinDesk found no clear catalyst behind the run, and the rest of the meme sector hasn't come along. Over 30 days DOGE is down 20%, BONK 19%, FLOKI 18% and SHIB 16%. PEPE is up 4%.
We lined the two up. PEPE's market cap of $2.13B is 71% of SHIB's $3.0B, so it would need about a 41% move with SHIB standing still to pass it. Measured against its December 2024 high of $0.00002803, PEPE is still 82% down and would need roughly 5.5x to get back.
Leverage hasn't chased it yet. On Hyperliquid, PEPE perp funding is sitting at the 0.00125% hourly base rate, the same as SHIB, BONK and FLOKI, with no premium over spot. The buying so far is in spot volume, and longs aren't paying up for it.
Flat funding after a 24% week means no crowded long to unwind. It also means there's no catalyst holding the price, so watch whether volume stays near $500M into the weekend.
Starknet's L1 research poll passed with 93.52%. 3,236 wallets voted, but 50 of them cast 89% of the voting power.
The Snapshot poll closed on Oct 22. It asked whether StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation should research turning Starknet into an independent post-quantum L1. Yes took 457.6M STRK of voting power, No took 22.4M and Neutral 9.3M.
We pulled the votes from Snapshot and ranked them. The top 20 wallets carried 47% of the weight on their own. The other 3,186 wallets added up to about 11%.
Total weight was 489M STRK, about 6.4% of the 7.59B STRK in circulation. A staking poll on the same Snapshot space in March drew 350 votes and 492M STRK. Nine times more voters this time, and almost the same weight.
The poll is non-binding and StarkWare abstained. Starknet stays an Ethereum L2 for now, STRK stays the token and the bridges to Ethereum stay open. Any real move needs a separate binding vote once the research is done.
On these numbers, that binding vote will be settled by a few dozen wallets.
Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade was due on the Hoodi testnet on Oct 26. Core developers pulled that date on Thursday, and there is no new one.
The holdup is EIP-8037, a change to how gas is charged for creating new state. ChainSecurity says it has already found 13 live contracts the new gas rules could hit, per CryptoSlate. The weak spot is failure handling: an attacker could force an out-of-gas failure that a contract then records as final, so a valid withdrawal or batch can't be retried.
Sepolia has run Glamsterdam since Oct 6. Hoodi is the last testnet left in line, and before the delay developers had Dec 1, Dec 8 and Dec 9 on the list of mainnet dates.
We checked the last upgrade. Fusaka went live on Hoodi on Oct 28, 2025 and on mainnet 36 days later, on Dec 3. Oct 26 to Dec 1 is also exactly 36 days, so the earliest date had no slack at all. On the same gap, Hoodi would need to fork by Nov 3 to keep Dec 9.
The Ethereum Foundation says ETH holders don't need to do anything. Glamsterdam was first aimed at the first half of 2026.
On the Fusaka timeline, a Hoodi fork after Nov 3 rules out all three December dates.
Five listed bitcoin miners moved power to AI and mined 6,188 fewer BTC between Jan 1 and Oct 19 than over the same stretch of 2025. Mining still got harder.
CryptoQuant's numbers: IREN, Bitfarms, Cipher, Core Scientific and TeraWulf went from 13,263 BTC to 7,075, down 47%, as they signed big AI and HPC leases. Five miners that stayed with bitcoin (MARA, CleanSpark, Riot, HIVE and American Bitcoin) went from 20,085 to 23,306. That is 3,221 more, about half of what the AI group gave up.
The network didn't slow down. Difficulty rose 5.92% on Oct 16 to 140.58T, the biggest jump since late June and the highest level since early March, per mempool.space. Its current estimate for the next adjustment around Oct 30 is roughly +3.6%. CryptoQuant has 30-day average hashrate about 8.8% below its all-time high, after sitting 18.3% under it in August.
So the hashpower the AI movers switched off has been replaced, and then some, by machines outside that group. For $BTC holders, a harder network is good news. For miners still running, every coin just got more expensive to produce.
Monero longs on Gate were getting paid to hold 12 hours ago. Their next funding payment works out to about 72% a year.
XMR jumped about 11% to $645 by 05:55 UTC, per CoinMarketCap, and still trades near $635 while Bitcoin is down 2% at about $81,700. Gate's XMR perpetual settled funding below zero at 00:00 UTC. The 08:00 UTC payment came in at +0.0445%, and the next one is set at about 0.065% per eight hours. Bitcoin's on the same exchange is 0.0056%, less than a tenth of that.
At that rate, a $10,000 XMR long pays about $20 a day to stay open. Hyperliquid charges funding every hour, and its current XMR rate of about 0.0295% comes to roughly $71 a day on the same size, or 0.7% of the position.
Funding resets fast, and these rates can halve by tonight. XMR is also still about 20% under its January high near $799.
A long paying 0.7% a day loses money if Monero just goes sideways.
Aerodrome and Velodrome are now one exchange called Aero, and every VELO converts to 0.044 AERO.
The rate comes from the split. Aerodrome holders get 94.5% of the new AERO supply and Velodrome holders get 5.5%. Spread that 117M AERO across 2.66B VELO and you land on 0.044.
At about $0.796 per AERO, the rate values one VELO at roughly $0.0350. VELO trades near $0.0348, a gap of about 0.6%. After gas and the hop from OP Mainnet to Base, there's likely nothing left to arbitrage.
In dollars, the whole Velodrome side is worth about $93M of new AERO. Aerodrome holders get about $1.6B.
Nothing converts on its own. Holders have to use the upgrade portal, and the swap can't be undone. Old emissions stopped at launch, Oct 22 at 08:00 UTC+8. There's no deadline yet, but the old front ends may close later.
Upgrade only from aerodrome.finance or velodrome.finance and ignore DM links.
See something interesting in the market → describe a quick idea to Binance AI Pro → review the workflow it builds → paper trade it to see how the logic actually behaves.
It’s not replacing judgment. It’s just speeding up the “turn this thought into something I can actually test” part. You still approve everything and control the funding.
US stablecoin issuers will have to pay holders back within two business days. The OCC published its final rule for the GENIUS Act on Wednesday, and it takes effect on January 18, 2027.
The rule defines a business day as any day other than a Saturday, Sunday or federal holiday. So a redemption asked for on a Friday can be paid as late as Tuesday. January 18, 2027 is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday, so the first day of the new rules isn't a business day either.
A few other details from the final text. Issuers keep a $5 million minimum capital floor, and it now applies after their first three years too. If redemption requests top 10% of a stablecoin's outstanding issuance in 24 hours, the issuer has to tell the OCC within 24 hours and can ask for more time. The automatic seven-day extension in the draft is gone. The OCC also dropped its proposed presumption that reward deals through affiliates break the ban on paying yield.
Anti-money-laundering rules come later, in a separate rulemaking with the Treasury.
US agencies have frozen $938 million in scam-linked crypto over the last 10 months. Americans lost at least $18.2 billion to Southeast Asia-based scams in 2025 alone.
Both figures come from US remarks at a UN fraud meeting in Vienna on Tuesday. The Justice Department's Scam Center Strike Force puts the exact amount restrained at $938,460,156.82. The same remarks say 503 fake websites were seized and about 9,000 Americans were warned in real time. President Trump is set to talk up the crackdown at a White House cybercrime event today.
By our math, $938 million is about 5% of one year's losses, roughly 5 cents for every dollar taken. The two periods don't line up exactly, but the gap is wide either way. Restrained also means frozen, not yet back with victims.
If a platform wants a fee or a "tax" before it lets you withdraw, stop sending money.
SpaceX and Tesla together hold 30,221 BTC, about $2.5B. Strategy holds 28 times that.
Elon Musk said on SpaceX's earnings call Tuesday that both companies have set up special committees of independent directors to look at a merger. He called it a good idea but said shareholders have to back it, and the committees have not agreed on any terms.
SpaceX reports 18,712 BTC and Tesla 11,509. By our count on the BitcoinTreasuries list, the combined stack would rank sixth among public companies, behind Strategy (848,517), Metaplanet (44,000), Twenty One (43,514), Strive (36,818) and MARA (35,577). It would move ahead of Bullish at 22,000.
SpaceX alone already holds more bitcoin than Tesla, which reports its own quarter after the US close today.
A merger would move the coins onto one balance sheet. It would not buy a single new bitcoin.
22,263 ZEC, about $28M, is still sitting in Zcash's original Sprout pool. When the NU7 upgrade activates, every one of those coins becomes unspendable.
Zcash developers set NU7 for block 3,543,405 on Tuesday. The chain was at 3,525,365 on Wednesday, so at 75 seconds a block that is about 15.7 days away, around Nov 5 to 6. The height still has to be merged into the spec and shipped in node software.
NU7 cuts block time from 75 seconds to 25, so three confirmations take about 75 seconds instead of 3 minutes 45. It also pulls 60% of each block's fees out of circulation and ends version 4 transactions, the only kind that can move Sprout funds.
By our math on node data, only 374 ZEC has left Sprout since July 30, about 4.5 ZEC a day. At that pace roughly 70 more leaves before the deadline, and more than 99% of the pool stays locked. A lot of it is likely lost keys. ZEC is up about 13% on the day, near $1,270 on Binance.
If you still have an old Sprout wallet, move the coins before block 3,543,405.
JPMorgan's first 10-year forecast for Bitcoin is 10% a year. Over the last 10 years, Bitcoin did about 63% a year.
The number is in J.P. Morgan Asset Management's 31st annual Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, the first edition with a Bitcoin forecast. Gold gets 5.5% a year. Bitcoin's expected volatility is 55%, and the bank still keeps it out of its main portfolio models because its correlations with other assets keep shifting.
By our math, 10% compounded for 10 years is 2.6x. From about $82,800 on Binance at 12:12 UTC+8 today, that lands near $215,000 in October 2036. Gold's 5.5% works out to 1.7x over the same stretch.
The decade behind us looks nothing like that. Bitcoin closed at $629 on Bitstamp on Oct 21, 2016. Today's price is about 132x that.
A 132x decade is not JPMorgan's base case. 2.6x is.
France's National Assembly voted 38 to 37 on Oct 16 to tax crypto-to-stablecoin swaps. Only 100 of its 577 deputies took part, and 25 of those abstained.
Today a French holder can move from one coin to another without owing tax, as long as no euros come out. Amendment I-3898 ends that for swaps into e-money tokens as MiCA defines them, meaning stablecoins pegged to one currency, such as USDC or EURC. From Jan 1, 2027, the gain on those swaps would be taxed at the 31.4% flat rate.
By our math, €10,000 of BTC bought on Jan 1, 2024 at about €38,424 is worth €19,082 at today's €73,320. Swap it into USDC under the new rule and about €2,852 in tax is due, even though no euros reached a bank account.
The government opposed the amendment and it is not law yet. The Assembly's vote on the budget's revenue section, first set for Tuesday, was pushed back, and the Senate still has its turn.
The Drift hacker turned the stolen funds into 130,262 ETH in April, at about $2,050 each. At $2,440 now, those same coins are worth about $318M, roughly $50M more than when they were bought.
Today the wallets moved again after two months of silence. Lookonchain counted 25,700 ETH, about $61.6M, sent into Tornado Cash over two hours, with about 81,000 ETH still sitting in linked wallets per Arkham. On the one exploiter address we checked, we counted at least 48 deposits of 100 ETH in 25 minutes.
The users who were drained got their recovery tokens on Oct 1. Drift's verified losses come to 299.5M USDT, one DFX token per dollar. The recovery pool backing those tokens held about 3.1M USDT at launch, so a DFX redeemed for about 1 cent per dollar lost. The pool grows from Velocity's trading revenue, any recovered funds, and up to 127.5M USDT that Tether has committed.
So far the thief's ETH has done better than the victims' claims.
BlackRock's IBIT took in $665.2M on Monday. Over the first 12 trading days of October it took in $189.5M combined.
By our math, that one session was 3.5 times IBIT's whole month up to Friday. It was the fund's biggest day since Oct 7, 2025, per Farside data. No other spot Bitcoin ETF had inflows: Fidelity's FBTC lost $83.6M and Grayscale's GBTC $54.9M, which left the group at +$526.7M for the day.
At Monday's US close near $81,900, IBIT's inflow is worth about 8,100 BTC. Miners produce about 450 new BTC a day, so one fund's inflow equals roughly 18 days of new supply.
October is still negative. US spot Bitcoin ETFs were down $614.7M for the month before Monday and are still down about $88M after it. Spot ether ETFs lost another $103.3M the same day.
One BlackRock fund did all of Monday's net buying. Fidelity and Grayscale holders were still selling.
Sophon's node buyers paid 20,800 ETH, about $60M, in 2024. The 20% of SOPH set aside for them is worth about $3.4M at today's price.
Had they kept the ether, it would still be worth about $49.5M. By our math, the whole node allocation is now worth about 7% of that.
Sophon says its chain shuts down for good on Nov 30, and Nov 25 is the deadline to withdraw. Its infrastructure and websites start going offline after that date. DefiLlama shows about $14.9K still on the chain, down from $20.1M at the peak in May 2025. Running the chain cost about $3.4M a year, the team told The Block in June. That is roughly what the node allocation is worth today.
SOPH itself lives on Ethereum and keeps trading after the shutdown. It is at $0.00172 on Binance, down about 98% from its $0.11 high in May 2025. Guardian NFTs and staked SOPH move to Ethereum automatically.
Liquid SOPH, ETH and USDC still on Sophon after Nov 25 may become permanently inaccessible. Withdraw through Sophon's official claim page only, and ignore any "migration" site sent to you.
Mesh and Visa say crypto and stablecoin balances will be spendable at Visa's 175 million-plus merchant locations, with no separate crypto card. Mesh converts the balance at checkout, and the merchant gets a normal Visa payment.
For scale, Allium measured $3.9B of stablecoin card spending from January to September 2026, 10x a year earlier. Visa moved $14.2T in fiscal 2025, about $1.6B an hour. By our math, this year's entire stablecoin card spend so far equals about 2.4 hours of Visa volume.
The growth is real. Allium counts $482B in stablecoin payments through September, up 45%, while supply grew 0.4% to $305B. Cards are still a sliver of that.
Mesh hasn't named a launch date, supported devices or participating wallets, and no conversion fee has been published.
